Elena Gonzales, PhD, is Curator of Civic Engagement & Social Justice at the Chicago History Museum and the lead curator of Aquí en Chicago (2025-2026). She co-edited the related exhibition book and co-created the podcast “The Missing Exhibition: Building Aquí.” Elena’s book, Exhibitions for Social Justice, debuted in Routledge’s Museum Meanings Series (2019).

How To Make Your Picture Interesting

Course Description:

In this studio class you will have an opportunity to use soluble graphite, watercolors, oil pastels and any other materials you like, to bring out abilities you didn’t know you had to play with the shape of space, and to power your art by concentrating on paradoxes and useful mistakes. How to: make a flat surface look 3-dimensional; discover unintended surprises in your work; make the spectator’s eye trust you; welcome weird and clumsy gestures. All of this should work to make your picture interesting to others.

Learn techniques to draw expressive portraits of animals across a variety of species. Using both provided reference materials and culminating with photos of your choice, explore facial structure and proportions, strategies for rendering textures, including fur, scales, and feathers in color, and how to best utilize reference photography to fully capture the essence of your subject.
