Monu / Mental is an exploration of mental health as a major social issue, empowered by community understanding and involvement. Through a visual dialogue the artists seek to give voice to conditions that have evaded concrete descriptions.

Matt Bodett, diagnosed with Schizo-affective disorder, uses his artwork to discuss the complexity of language in mental illnesses and its human effects.

What if an artist’s body of work could exist and develop somewhere in between the studio and the exhibition space? In order to provide artists a semi-public, hybrid work and exhibition space, the Evanston Art Center launched an inaugural “artwork-in-residence” program. Artists work on projects-in-progress, experiment with the display of their artwork, host studio visits and engage the community of the Evanston Art Center and the broader art community in the development of their work in ways that they see fit.

 

SHULIN SUN

Shulin Sun grew up in Beijing, China shortly following the Communist Revolution. Growing up during this tumultuous period lead to a passion for the strength and resiliency of life and its ability to thrive even under extreme conditions. Sun combines traditional Chinese painting techniques with elements from contemporary art to create energetic shapes, exaggerated gestures and free flowing lines that reflect the energy and life in nature.

The Evanston Art Center’s Winter Arts & Crafts Expo is one of the largest and most celebrated craft shows in the Chicago area. The 15th annual Expo will feature original arts and crafts by over 100 selected artisans, featuring works of jewelry, ceramics, fiber, metal, glass, painting, photography, mixed-media, and more.

SURFACE TENSION: BEAUTY AND FRAGILITY IN LAKE MICHIGAN

July 7-30, 2017

Ted Glasoe and Nelson Armour collaborate in this traveling exhibition designed to provoke viewers into considering the hidden but profound pollution of Lake Michigan. Poignant photographs of Lake Michigan that invite the viewer to contemplate the lake’s power are combined with altered photographs of the lake that unsettle the viewer’s sense of beauty.

Javier Jasso’s mixed media sculpture uses personal experience and research to address the social and cultural issues in searching and finding a place to call “home”. Metal, plaster, plastic and wood, which provide the foundation for protective structures, are turned into art installations that express an importance of family and home.

The Evanston Art Center will partner with Evanston Made, a month-long celebration of the arts in Evanston designed to create opportunities for artists to engage with the community. The exhibition will feature works from local Evanston artists and celebrate the Evanston arts community.
