Course Description:

Practice drawing techniques via lectures, warm-up drawings, and longer finished poses. Techniques may include gesture and organizational line, contour line, shape-plane-volume-modeling, value, foreshortening, and anatomical studies. We will work from a clothed model and have critiques to provide a supportive class response. Choose to work in drawing and/or painting mediums.

Continuing our Contemplative Calligraphy practice with the broad-nib Pilot Parallel Pen, we further explore the Italic hand, which dates back to the early Renaissance in Italy. This elegant hand is highly versatile and compact, making it practical for addressing envelopes and for rendering longer quotations and poetry. Emphasis will be on consistency in spacing as well as the letterforms themselves, plus basic composition and layout considerations for calligraphic art. Prerequisite V1010 or consent of instructor.

We will look at how a variety of artists have depicted landscapes in their paintings, and each week be prompted by a topic(such as atmospheric perspective, painting distressed streets and walls, painting bodies of water). Whether you are painting in your own back yard or in a variety of travel locations, we will hone our observational skills, learn new techniques, and work with appropriate color palettes.
