Course Description:

Survey the development of Outsider Art or l'art brut (raw art) - its historic antecedents in the 19th century and the parallel paths it has taken in Europe, England, and various regions of the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition to major artists, you will also study some of the psychiatrists. historians and collectors who have helped to shape the field. Outsider Art's position in the wider realm of self-taught art, its relationship to folk and ethnographic art, visionary art, neuve invention, as well as the challenge of defining these terms and categories, will also be explored.
