Course Description:
While learning to create beautiful writing with the broad-nib Pilot Parallel Pen, we will also be cultivating a peaceful, contemplative practice that has brought equanimity and calm to calligraphers throughout the ages. Instruction emphasizes spacing and the importance of negative space, the letterforms and the historical context of the Foundational hand, developed in the last century by Edward Johnston. The Foundational hand is excellent preparation for all other hand calligraphy - especially for Italic. No prior art or calligraphy experience is required for this introductory class.

Except for the Independent Study Program, EAC membership is no longer required to take adult classes. EAC members receive a tuition discount on all adult classes, youth classes and workshops. A $75 Independent Study membership is required to participate in the Independent Study Program. The Evanston resident discount no longer applies.
