Root Cause 1

A visualization of how Chicago's formation maps on to contemporary neighborhood inequality. The checkerboard pattern is no anomaly. It was a direct result of the federal government building the Illinois and Michigan canal. As a result, the north side and pockets of the south side developed first. The corridor of neighborhoods stretching through the southwest sides still suffer from the consequences of this initial uneven development.
