Position Description

Fulltime Exempt Position                                            Requires evening and weekend hours



The Director of Education is fiscally responsible for managing all aspects of the art education program, the classrooms and studios, curriculum, faculty and coordinators.  Working closely with the faculty the Director of Education helps to develop a creatively challenging, economically expanding, interdisciplinary year-round curriculum for students of all ages.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Actively manage the day-to-day operations of the art studios by visiting classes, supporting the studio coordinators and faculty, reviewing the class materials, overseeing and when needed, maintaining the general classroom environment.
  • Regularly review class and student data to identify where potential classes need to be added and where existing classes need to be refreshed or eliminated. 
  • Thoughtfully build two-way communication streams with faculty, studio coordinators, students and all those involved in the education program to ensure exceptional classroom experiences.
  • Interact regularly with faculty members to keep them informed of general EAC operations that may impact the education staff and students.  Examples include but are not limited to: advising them of class schedules, room assignments, changes in parking, overall building information and EAC special events.
  • Identify faculty who can create and develop new programs and curriculum and actively work with faculty members to promote new programs.
  • Establish and build community partnerships with schools, community centers, libraries, and other organizations interested in EAC.
  • Promote the EAC galleries and public spaces to visitors by giving tours and developing public programs that encourage the audience to engage with visual art, theory and practice.
  • Proactively explore ideas for new revenue streams through arts education initiatives that include professional in-service development for art teachers, for example District 65 and 202, artists’ residencies, new opportunities for studio activities, and other art endeavors that support EAC’s mission.
  • Work with the Education Committee Chair/Co-Chair to lead the monthly committee meetings and prepare material to present at the monthly Board meetings.  As requested, participate in the monthly Board meetings,
  • Initiate and lead the process for the seasonal course catalogs from course descriptions and general content, to RFP deadlines, obtaining mailing lists, observing printing deadlines and ensuring that catalogs are mailed.
  • Review student surveys with faculty and keep written memorandum of any problematic issues.
  • Participate in the preparation of the annual budget and continually monitor budget numbers, identifying potential issues to discuss with the President & CEO.
  • Working with the President & CEO hire new faculty members and appoint classroom coordinators.
  • Assist in maintaining required information for faculty payments including W9 information, direct deposits forms, time sheets, communication of hourly payments.
  • Actively participate in EAC staff meetings finding new ways that the Education team can intersect with other EAC areas such as the Exhibitions and Development teams initiatives.
  • Partner with colleagues as needed to enhance the EAC environment, operations, and public relations to the larger community.

Education, Skills and Experience

  • Preferred Master’s Degree in an Art related discipline such as Art Education, Art Administration, Art Management
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a field of art education
  • A strategic thinker with tactical skills
  • Computer and database savvy with skills in social media and websites
  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written
  • A creative problem solver
  • Analytically adept in reviewing and understanding data
  • Adept at working with and managing a variety of people that include artist faculty members, students of all ages, parents, community members, and visiting artists
  • Ability to diffuse and resolve conflicts
