EVANSTON ART CENTER HIRES NEW DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION: W KEITH BROWN

Keith Brown is a Chicago-based art educator, researcher, and writer, whose practices center on contemporary art education, visual studies, and postmodern art history, theory, and criticism

Collective experiences and social justice are important to Brown. He interested in creating some art

education-based public programs and opportunities for art teachers, teens, and the public to engage

in dialogues around contemporary art. Brown plans to augment the classes’ exploration of “media,

technique, and skills acquisition” with broader issues. As a critical community art center, Brown feels

the Evanston Art Center should be thinking about how everyday life and culture inform art making

and how art made here, at the Art Center, serves our present and future life in a Democratic society.

Since moving to Chicago in 2006, Brown has taught visual art and art history at both the high school

and community level. In 2009, he co-founded the Critical Visual Art Education (CVAE) Club. In 2010,

he joined the Chicago-based artistic and pedagogical collective Stockyard Institute and serves as

editor and board member for the Illinois Art Education Association. His writing can be found in

Studies in Art Education, Proximity Magazine, Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art, and Chicago

Art Magazine. In 2012, his work will be included in books on creativity, visual studies, and art

education.

Brown received a BA in Fine Art from the University of Kentucky. He also received his MA in Art

Education (MAAE) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master of Education from

DePaul University.
