DATES: August 5-August 25, 2013

From August 5 through August 25, the galleries of the Evanston Art Center (EAC) will feature “The Art of Craft: Works from NorthShore University HealthSystem’s Collection of Fine American Craft.” The exhibition will showcase works from master craft artisans and twenty years of Purchase Awards from the American Craft Exposition, which raises funds for ovarian and breast cancer research at NorthShore. The exhibition is a prelude to the 2013 American Craft Exposition (ACE), which will be held August 23-35 at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion on the Evanston (IL) campus of Northwestern University.

For the first time, the exhibition will bring together works from the collection of NorthShore University HealthSystem, which are displayed at its four hospitals (Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital, Highland Park Hospital and Skokie Hospital). The show includes exquisite objects of 36 of the country’s leading craft artists working in ceramics, glass, fiber, metal, and wood.  Many of the artists are also represented in the White House Collection of American Crafts as well as museums and fine galleries throughout the country.

In addition to the exhibition, the American Craft Exposition will kick off with “The Power of Inspiration: Whether You Believe It or Not,” a lecture by Michael Mode, Master Woodturner. This lecture will be held at the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University, 40 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston, on Sunday,

August 4 at 3 pm.  The Exhibition of the master craft artisans will be held at the

Evanston Art Center, 2603 Sheridan Road opening on August 5 and closing on

August 25. Both events are free and open to the public.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the EAC will offer a two-day master class with ACE Artist Metalsmith and Sculptor, Darlys Ewoldt. Her workshop, “Poetic Objects of Containment and Patina,” will be held at the EAC on August 17-18.  More information about this special class can be found at EAC’s web site: www.evanstonartcenter.org.

The 29th annual American Craft Exposition will feature one-of-a-kind and luxury pieces from over 160 of the country’s most noted craftspeople who will be on hand to discuss and sell their work.  For more information on the American Craft Expo event, visit their website at americancraftexpo.org/about/.
