The 21st Annual Evanston + Vicinity Biennial will once again offer Illinois artists an opportunity to have their artwork viewed by one of the area's leading curators and, if selected, participate in one of the most well-regarded and well-attended juried shows in the Chicago area. The Evanston Biennial showcases today’s most promising contemporary artists. Artists working in a variety of mediums and representing diverse communities and age groups submit every year. Cash awards will be presented at the artists’ reception on Sunday, August 12, 2012 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Evanston Art Center. The reception is free and open to the public.

This year’s juror is Shannon Stratton, Founder, Executive Director and Creative Director of threewalls, a prominent Chicago art gallery. Stratton founded the not-for-profit residency and exhibition space in 2003, and in the past eight years the space has grown into a vital arts organization that provides solo exhibitions for regional artists, residencies, grants to artists, publications, conferences and commissioning programs. The mission of threewalls is to provide a stable base of support to Chicagoland artists. Stratton received her BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design. She then went on to receive both her MFA in Fiber and Material Studies and MAAH in Art History Theory and Criticism from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she now teaches in the Art History, Theory & Criticism and Fiber & Material Studies departments. In 2010, NewCity named her one of the top five most vital people in the visual arts in Chicago. In 2011 she was a fellow of the NAMAC Visual Arts Leadership Institute, and she was one of nine leaders in the arts featured in the Chicago Tribune's 2011 Chicagoans of the Year.

The Evanston Art Center is one of the most respected nonprofit community art centers in Illinois. Since its founding in 1929, the Evanston Art Center has been a major force in fostering the appreciation and expression of the visual arts among the diverse audiences of the North Shore and Greater Chicago areas, and continues to do so through arts classes, public lectures, youth outreach activities, and an outstanding exhibition program.

The Evanston Art Center is located at 2603 Sheridan Road, Evanston, IL. Limited parking is available. Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday, 10 AM – 10 PM; Friday & Saturday, 10 AM – 4 PM; Sunday, 1 – 4 PM.
