Ellen Bailey Dickson | Works on Paper

triptych of black and white prints

On view May 23 - July 26, 2026

Transforming abstract thought onto a smooth metal surface that will be covered in tar, scored with a sharp metal tool, dipped in acid, covered with tree rosin or soap or sugar or wax, dipped in more acid, and scraped and burnished into a finished piece of art is the challenge of intaglio. The process meanders from intent through mishaps into opportunity until finally arriving at wonder. Intaglio promises control yet forces a meditative and slow approach. The artist has full agency yet must surrender to the peccadillos of printmaking.

Texture creates and compliments form. Ellen Bailey Dickson’s work operates at the intersection of artistic expression and printmaking exploration, where systems of approach and treatment of surface become places of meaning. Through intaglio processes, she engages material as both method and metaphor, using subtle variation to challenge the interpretation of fixed mental patterns and invite sustained, contemplative viewing.

Ellen Bailey Dickson, FAIA, is a Chicago-based artist whose practice is informed by her training in architecture. Working primarily in printmaking, she explores pattern, structure, and narrative through material and process. Through these methods, Dickson investigates the expressive potential of surface, form, and texture. Having received her Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Masters in Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Bailey Dickson also studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 2016 she was elevated to the College of Fellows by the American Institute of Architects in recognition of her work in practice, design and mentoring.
