On view January 16 - February 21, 2027

Opening Reception Sunday, January 17, 1-3 pm

These images are from an ongoing series begun in 2011. Originally conceived as an exercise in photographic minimalism, the series was made using a smartphone camera and app that deliberately removed many of the technical decisions traditionally associated with photography. What remained were the essentials: Subject, Light, and Composition.

The resulting images are whimsical and enigmatic glimpses of everyday life—moments discovered in familiar places, often close to home, and intended to engage, challenge, and amuse the viewer.

Bill Burlingham grew up in Winnetka, Illinois, where his interest in photography took root at New Trier High School under the guidance of teacher and photographer Barbara Crane. He later earned a degree in photography at Southern Illinois University.

For many years, Bill owned and operated a commercial photography studio in Evanston, working with a wide range of clients. After retiring from commercial photography and moving to Skokie, he turned his attention to photography as a personal and creative pursuit.

Today, Bill approaches photography with the same curiosity that first drew him to the medium, with a keen eye for the unexpected, peculiar, and quietly beautiful details of everyday life.
