The contemporary curator is known as the selector and interpreter of works of art for an exhibition. As the curatorial profession evolves, a myriad of roles have emerged, offering a bridge forward to the audience, the artist, and the gallery and museum.
Elena Gonzales, PhD, is Curator of Civic Engagement & Social Justice at the Chicago History Museum and the lead curator of Aquí en Chicago (2025-2026). She co-edited the related exhibition book and co-created the podcast “The Missing Exhibition: Building Aquí.” Elena’s book, Exhibitions for Social Justice, debuted in Routledge’s Museum Meanings Series (2019). Elena is a lifelong resident of Cook County and grew up in a bi-cultural Mexican and Polish-American home.
Join us for an exciting and thought-provoking afternoon of poetry, conversation, and creative exploration inspired by Presence and Absence: The Space Between. Indira Freitas Johnson will explain the premise of the exhibition. Acclaimed poet Cin Salach will share selections from her work and guide us in reflecting on a tender and universal question: how are the absent people in our lives still profoundly present? Through poetry and dialogue, we’ll begin to uncover the invisible threads that continue to bind us.
Each workshop offered will be from 12 - 3 pm on the respective date, instructed by Vahnaree Weiss.
Workshops are $45 per class
