Course Description:
Monotype traditionally requires brushes and is historically a way for painters to enter the medium of printmaking. This workshop focuses on trace monotype, which is quite different. Trace monotype is a linear approach to making one-of-a-kind prints – one that feels much more like drawing than painting. Done most effectively on dry Asian paper, trace monotype can stand on its own or can be the beginnings of collages or mixed media works. Trace monotype is portable, does not use a press, and invites possibilities for plein air printmaking. In this workshop, participants will also practice press printing and learn to stencil print, counterproof, and ghost print to augment their trace monotype images and add passages of color. Accessible and unique, these techniques are for artists of varied experience, from beginning drawing students to seasoned printmakers.
