Course Description:

Originating from the Italian words for light and dark respectively, Chiaroscuro is a centuries’ old drawing technique that focuses on fleshing out light in the dark to produce emotionally charged and dynamic compositions. You will be engaged in tonal drawing strategies with charcoal to achieve similar effects, drawing from both still lives and figure models. The classroom will get progressively darker every week, starting with a few overhead lights on the first couple of sessions, and finishing the last class working only by candlelight, just as Carravagio did. This class is perfect for both the seasoned draftsman who wants to embark on a deep study of this technique, as well as the beginner artist who has a grasp of basic drawing and is itching for something more vivacious and striking.

While live models will be used for the last 4 class sessions, students will first gain comfort with the technique using still-life subject matter for the first two sessions before transitioning to figuration.
