Six-week class beginning September 11, 2025
(This class meets every other week: Sept 11, Sep 25, Oct 9, Oct 23, Nov 6 and Nov 20 )
Course Description:
This fall we will explore a series of films made under duress; when producers and directors come to conflict and the film is caught in the middle, what sometimes results is a film released in various iterations. The Director's Cut will investigate why and how a film may get released in one form and then re-released in a new form later on, though we will only watch one version of each film. One of the films we will explore has been released in several iterations over multiple decades, in another case the true 'director's cut' is likely lost forever. We will explore such films as Orson Welles' The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), Terry Gilliam's Brazil (1985), Ridley Scott's Bladerunner: The Final Cut (2007), Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club: Encore (Coppola, 2017), and others.
