New Art Examiner co-founder Derek Guthrie and an intergenerational panel of local art writers discuss the historical significance and future of art criticism in Chicago. The dialogue will touch upon the current discourses of modern and postmodern approaches to art criticism, art writing, new arts journalism, institutional authority and influence (art schools, art museums, etc.) as well as contemporary art strategies that are shaping culture now. The perceived goal of this event is to establish certain histories and commonalities that can move our city forward.

EAC faculty member, Janis Pozzi-Johnson, will be exhibiting her work at Chicago's Perimeter Gallery, located at 210 West Superior Street. We hope you will join Janis at the opening reception on Friday, March 16, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Please join us at the opening reception to celebrate the creative work of our diverse community of artists. The opening reception and exhibiton is free and open to the public. This exhibition will be on view through February 5, 2012.

Instead of fighting holiday crowds, you can take a tour of the EAC’s home, the historic Harley Clarke House, at 11am, 1pm, or 3pm on Saturday, November 26th. You can also participate in a sock puppet workshop from 1:30 – 3:30. The best part is, all events are free!

Meet and listen to the artists, fashion designers, and writers who contributed to the exhibition dimensional lines: art + dress talk about their work, practice, and experience of collaborating on this exceptional exhibition.

Gallery 4502 presents "Line Dancing: A Drawing Show" on view from September 30 to December 16, 2011. Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, September 30 from 5pm to 7pm.

Gallery 4502 is located in the Lorraine H Morton Civic Center at 2100 Ridge Avenue, Evanston on the fourth floor.

African Art Collection. Join Art After Five coordinator and celebrated artist, Linda Kramer, for a tour of a spectacular collection of Western and Eastern African art works. This collection on view in a North Shore home encompasses over 300 African works, the oldest being 2,500 years old and the more recent dated 2010. 

Please join us for an exciting evening exploration of Western and Eastern African artworks and learn about their singular influence on modern art.

As a prelude to his Fall two-day workshop at the Evanston Art Center, Daniel Miller will be giving a presentation of his and other artists' use of kinetic motion and lights in artwork. Daniel Miller is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Art and Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. "Motion and Light in Art" takes place in the main EAC building, all are welcome to attend, and admission is FREE!

Artist Tanya Gill will be helping all those people, young and old and in between, who enjoy building things. In this case, with your help, Tanya will be building an entire "environment" made of of recycled paper products. Materials like phone books, egg cartons, paper towel rolls, paint color chips, used menus, shredded paper and more will morph, under the talented direction of Tanya, into a one-of-a-kind paper structure.

Yes, that's right. We're encouraging children (and adults) to play with their food. Sculpture on the Grounds artist, Gary Orlinsky, will offer this one-time workshop before the official opening of his site-specific sculpture, "Elevated" is unveiled on the front lawn of the Art Center.

"Playing with Your Food" is a free workshop that is designed for all ages. Orlinsky teaches basic elements of 3-D design and sculpture by using foods from around the world. The end products are definitely abstract. 

Jesse Harrod, one of the artists exhibiting in our summer exhibition CUT will lead the FABRIC AS PAINT weekend workshop: Saturday, June 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 26 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. You'll work with colorful fabrics and embellishments while you learn basic embroidery and piecing skills along with an introduction to color theory. All students will finish a beautiful piece of artwork by end of this fascinating workshop.

The Evanston Art Center and Borderbend Arts Collective are proud to present "Trees Speaking to the Wind", a nature-themed performance event at the Evanston Art Center on Monday, June 20, 2011, with poetry readings by Allan Johnston and Tim Hunt, as well as phonography performed by an ensemble. This event also commemorates the 38th World Environment Day. "Trees Speaking to the Wind" is supported by funding from Poets & Writers, and it is free and open to the public, all ages.

Join CUT exhibition curators Eleanor Spiess-Ferris and Beth Hart for the opening reception of this fascinating exhibition. At 2 p.m. you are welcome to join us for a discussion with some of the exhibiting artists about their art practices, the use of paper as a medium, and more. This exhibition will be on view from June 5 through August 7, 2011.
