Abdoulaye Conde is a self-taught visual artist and muralist from Conakry, Guinea, now based on the north side of Chicago. Abdoulaye is known for his vibrant and culturally rich artwork, which blends tradition and contemporary influences inspired by his Malinke heritage and experiences across cultures. Abdoulaye is also a skilled multi-instrumentalist, most notably playing the kora. Through his art and music, Abdoulaye celebrates resilience, hope, joy, and unity.
My art blends tradition from my West African roots with global and modern influences from my experiences across cultures. I utilize bold and vibrant pigments to create images with woven black lines with a mosaic-like feature. I developed this style of art called “Gnabassan” (meaning “all mixed up” in Malink,e my native language), a concept that celebrates both the unity and diversity of life. The idea of my concept is about reimagining contrasts and finding beauty in their connection.
