Sculpture on the Grounds
Since 1994, we have selected 17 artists to create and install large-scale, site-specific and impermanent sculptures on the gracious front lawn adjacent to the Art Center’s historic home. Each artist discovered imaginative ways to dialog with this site, often employing forms and materials found in nature and other times relying on references to the specific geography and history of the area. Elements of sound and community participation have also been incorporated into the pieces in order to heighten visitor engagement.
These outdoor sculptures have garnered both regional and national press attention. Projects have been covered by media outlets such as WTTW’s ArtBeat and Art AcrossAmerica, Sculpture Magazine, Chicago Reader, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, New Art Examiner, and The Pioneer Press. The National Endowment for the Arts, the Illinois Arts Council, the Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation and others supported these sculptural projects in the past.
Every summer, our community happily anticipates the installation of the next artwork in our Sculpture on the Grounds series. They look forward to having their perceptions of this outdoor space once again realigned.
