Sculpture on the Grounds
Each year since 1994, the Art Center has commissioned an artist to create a unique site-specific temporary installation on the front lawn of the Center. The Sculpture on the Grounds program differs from the traditional sculpture park in that it is designed to present installations specifically created with the Art Center's unusual location in mind. The Center is situated in Lighthouse Landing Park on Sheridan Road in Evanston, IL, on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. The Sculpture on the Grounds installations are viewed throughout the year by people using the adjoining beach and park, as well as students, faculty, exhibiting artists, and other visitors to the Evanston Art Center.

The Evanston Art Center seeks proposals from Chicago and Midwestern sculptors for future Sculpture on the Grounds projects. The Evanston Art Center encourages applicants to view the Guidelines for Applicants before submitting an application.

Summer 2009 - Spring 2010
Actual Size artists Gail Simpson and Aristotle Georgiades bring a contemporary update to a pastoral image for the grounds of the Evanston Art Center. Inspired by the current economic situation and its effect on our communities, this large scale sculpture takes the form of a tipped over wooden bucket pouring its contents out onto the ground. A cluster of rooftops is bobbing downstream out of the bucket and collecting in puddles at the mouth of the sculpture. Although the image initially suggests the children’s nursery rhyme of “Jack & Jill” or the phrase “no use crying over spilt milk,” it subsequently challenges our assumptions about the stability of neighborhood, community, and home.
