Course Description:
For beginners: This class will initiate you to oil paint and oil painting. The first approach will be the discovery of the paint and its specificities. Learn about paint’s composition and properties and how to use it. Then discover the mediums and additives that need to be used with oils and learn basic old master’s techniques such as Van Eyck method. Through a variety of exercises, we will practice these techniques: Still Life, a la fresca, quick observation, fat over lean, and working from photographs. The goal will be for you to be comfortable with using oil paints in your personal art projects.
Intermediate and advanced: If you have more painting experience, you will begin with challenges through specific assignments – For example by pushing the layering and glazing techniques beyond in order to learn how to improve depth and resolution in your paintings. In a second phase, you will learn how to apply old masters’ techniques into your contemporary practice. You will be introduced to the work of artist from different periods as examples to learn from. Among the subjects cover in this class will be: Glazing, layering, working with liquid paints, using palette knives, and making your own mediums and paints.
