Course Description:

Working from photos compose and develop portraits in color using paint or pastel. Learn to emphasize the light and form aspects of your portraiture. Previous drawing and painting experience highly recommended.

  • This interactive online class is presented via Zoom. Please download Zoom prior to your first class: (

  • You will be emailed Zoom meeting instructions, including a unique URL and meeting ID, to join the class 1 day before the start of the class.

  • Review the supply list posted. Students are responsible for purchasing all necessary supplies except where indicated.

  • Classes that do not meet enrollment minimums will be cancelled three days prior to the start of the class.

Supply list for first class: We will be working in monochrome for the first class. For those painting in oil or acrylic bring white and black paint, brushes, a 11x14 (exact size not necessary) canvas or canvas board. For those working in pastel bring pastel paper, sticks of white, black and gray soft pastel (Nupastel is a good brand but any soft pastel brand will work.) A more detailed supply list will be discussed on the first day.

Except for the Independent Study Program, EAC membership is no longer required to take adult classes. EAC members receive a tuition discount on all adult classes, youth classes and workshops. A $75 Independent Study membership is required to participate in the Independent Study Program. The Evanston resident discount no longer applies.
