Course Description:

What is contemporary art? What makes a piece categorized as a painting versus a sculpture?

Through inquiry-based learning, students will learn about contemporary art making processes and movements. Students will observe the artwork of such contemporary painters such as Gerhard Richter, Jeff Koons and installation artist Felix Gonzales-Torres.  With the emergence and popularity of street art in recent years, museums and galleries are starting to become interested in that which was once considered vandalism. Students will learn about the evolving movement through slide lecture and then learn and practice techniques such as stenciling, printmaking and emulsion transfer.
