Adult Workshops

This course will help demystify the medium of watercolor. Students will learn about techniques unique to watercolor painting, including using the white of the paper as a source of light, glazing with layers, wet-on wet painting, dry brush techniques, and more.

SUPPLIES

Please bring these items to the first class:

At least 3 paint colors, med. brush or brushes, palette, plastic cups (for water), pencil, eraser, watercolor tablet-140# paper (11” x 15” is a good size)

The following list will be discussed in the first class:
Brands of Watercolor paints (in tubes): Winsor-Newton, Holbein, Grumbacher Finest, Rembrandt, Schmincke, or Van Gogh student grade

Recommended colors:
• Cobalt Violet • Cadmium Yellor or Winsor Yellow • Alizarin Crimson • Olive Green • Burnt Umber • Thalo Blue or Winsor Blue • Burnt Sienna • Cobalt Blue • Raw Umber • Cerulean Blue • Cadmium Red or Winsor Red • Ultramarine Blue • Yellow Ocher

Brushes:
Rounds-#10 or #12 lg. and #6 or #8 small. Buy good quality sable or natural hair brushes. A few good brushes can do the job for most paintings!!
Flats-1” or 1/2” for large wash areas. Sable or natural hair is the best.

Watercolor Paper:
Arches paper (sold in sheets) - 140#, 300#, 400#. Hot pressed (smooth), cold pressed (semi-smooth), rough. Gator board for soaking and stretching paper.
Watercolor tablets—don’t buy 90# paper, see above for first class

Watercolor Palette:
White plastic palette (John Pike or similar style is great), or white butcher tray
